Winifred Scott, Ph.D.

ABOUT ME

My experience as a Clinical Psychologist began a number years ago, when I was invited to be a member of the Ramsey County County Child Abuse Team, in St. Paul, Minnesota. It was my responsibility to evaluate every child, then to report evaluation findings to the Team, and participate in the development of a treatment plan for the child and family. My work quickly developed into the subject of my Ph.D. thesis at the University of Minnesota as I began an exploration of issues in child abuse in our community. After a few years of deep involvement in the problem of child abuse, and completion of my dissertation, I continued my work in the Ramsey County Mental Health Center. I expanded my interest to a diverse group of people working with both children and adults. I loved this work. I learned more about issues and treatment for a wide variety of psychological conditions.

I have always cherished my work with children, and likewise have greatly valued my work with adults. I learn from every client and find meaning in each and every experience. I am grateful for the opportunity to make a difference in so many people's lives. I love my work so much that I have never wanted to stop!

Treatment Modes

EXPERIENCE

Special Techniques

These are techniques which aid in coping effectively with anxiety and depression.

  • Relaxation and imagery

  • Sand play

Talk Therapy

Talking things through is always the first line of approach. It is helpful in its own right to sort things out, identify problematic situations, and consider cause and effect, but also to determine treatment approach most conducive to the client’s wishes.

Cognitive Behavior Therapy

This therapy involves consciously identifying sources of discomfort, and learning to reframe the situation into one which is thoughtful and clear, rather being colored with anxiety, shame, or anger. Our emotions are indeed the source of our pain, and sometimes create the related thought patterns, rather than the opposite.

Combination of Modes

Generally therapy involves a combination of talking together and various special techniques, as needed.
